The Casa Covão da Abitureira had originally been a sandal-making factory from 1937 (year in which the construction of the house was completed) until 1950 (year in which the Galician-born original proprietor passed away). From then until 1997, the house had been left abandoned. Today, the house contains 7 rooms and 4 apartments and is committed to delivering the maximum to its guests (guest satisfaction is a priority). The Casa Covão da Abitureira is located by the banks of the River Tagus (50 metres away) in the small (1,000 inhabitants) historical village of Belver, roughly at the geographical centre of Portugal, 30 kms away from Abrantes (the nearest large urban centre) and 60 kms from Portalegre (the district capital). The main touristic and historical sites closest to the house are the Castle of Belver (500 metres away), the Alamal Fluvial Beach (2 kms away), the Convent of Christ and the respective Castle of Tomar (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the two breathtaking fortified cities of Castelo de Vide (70 Kms away) and Marvão (80 kms away) near the Spanish border.
