The Murray Arms Hotel is a listed building, set in a National Trust for Scotland Conservation Area, on the outskirts of the Galloway Forrest Park, and is an important part of Gatehouse of Fleet’s history. Many travellers have passed through Gatehouse – the most well known being Robert Burns. During his first tour of Galloway in 1793 he stayed in this Hotel with John Syme. During his stay he composed new verses to the old tune “Hey Tutti Taitie”. This he did and named it “Robert Bruce’s March To Bannockburn” – that tune is now better known by its opening words, “Scots Wha Hae” (Scots Who Have).
