Basilica San Pietro (Spoleto, Italy)

The Basilica of San Pietro in Spoleto was built on a Bronze Age burial site. The first Christian structure was built in the 5th century to house relics of St Peter’s chains. After damage from fire and wars, major rebuilding began in the 12th century and lasted until 1699. It was at one time the cathedral of Spoleto, built outside the walls (“extra Moenia”) as was common in the region, and was the burial place of the bishops. A 17th century monumental stone staircase leads to it, but its most striking feature is the 12th century façade, considered one of the finest examples of Umbrian Romanesque architecture. Three bands of carved reliefs depict biblical and earthly scenes. The bottom section is particularly delicate and shows byzantine influences in the decoration. Major renovation of the interior was undertaken in 2008 and a lapidary museum is in development.
