The Historic Centre of Bruges covers an area of about 430 hectares and because of its canals is often referred to as the Venice of the North. In the 9th century Bruges was already a trading city, and between the 11th and the 16th century it was an international commercial trading center. In the 16th century the waterway linking the city to the sea started to silt up and the merchants and traders left. The city stayed silent for 400 years until the late 19th century when Bruges returned to life as the best-preserved medieval city in western Europe. It has many important medieval and Gothic buildings like the Church of Our Lady, the belfry, the beguinage, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the City Hall. The Historic Centre of Bruges was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. Many historical buildings have been proclaimed ‘protected monument’ by the city council and belong to the historical heritage of the city.
