Burgers Zoo was founded by Johan Burgers in 1913 and has been in Arnhem since 1923. In keeping with modern sensitivities, the animals’ environments are as natural as possible. The zoo has created separate eco-systems in which the visitor ventures on a journey of discovery. It is divided up into wildlife gardens, desert, safari park, ocean, bush, adventure land and mangrove. Overall it has 60 species of mammals, 125 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles and 250 species of fish. The exact number of individual animals is difficult to count because many small creatures live freely in the land and water environments. The zoo also takes part in breeding programmes for threatened species. Opening hours are 9am to 7pm in summer and until dusk in winter. However, the website has details of when specific animal groups are best seen. No dogs allowed. Wheelchairs can be hired, although the zoo warns that there are some hilly stretches. Guided tours led by an expert can be booked. Corporate and private events are also offered.
