Cathedral of Messina (Messina, Italy)

The Cathedral dates back to 1160 and was consecrated in 1197.It was severely damaged several times through earthquake and fire, so that what can be seen today is nearly completely rebuilt. Inside the cathedral are several paintings and sculptures to be seen and it is home to the largest organ in Italy, the third largest in Europe. On display is also the “Cloak of Gold” which is used to cover the “Madonna della lettera” on the high altar of the cathedral. It weighs more than 20 kilos and is decorated with precious stones. The cathedral is also famous for tis astronomical clock-tower. There is a possibility to take a guided tour.
