The Cenotaph is situated in Whitehall, London. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, and is made from Portland stone. Buildong took place between 1919 and 1920. The Cenotaph replaced an identical wood-and-plaster cenotaph erected in 1919 for the Allied Victory Parade. The words “The Glorious Dead” were chosen by Rudyard Kipling and there is a carved wreath on each end. It is used to commemorate all of the dead in all wars in which British servicemen have fought and the dates of the First and Second World Wars are inscribed on it in Roman numerals.
