Docklands Light Railway is a rail transport system operating on the east side of London. The description “light” refers to a lower speed, lower capacity service than traditional “heavy” rail systems, but faster and larger than a tram system. It opened in 1987 to service the developments in the Docklands area, as its name implies. However, as well as linking the City to Docklands and London City Airport, the network now also reaches to Stratford in the north and Lewisham in the south. Altogether it covers 19 miles with 40 stations and carries nearly 70 million passengers. The Railway will be an important transport link during the Olympic Games in 2012. The system is automated and computer controlled, with no driver. A Passenger Service Agent is on the train to check tickets and make announcements. He can also take control of the train if necessary. Services run from 5.30am to 12.30am Monday to Saturday and from 7am to 11.30pm on Sunday. Fares are the same as those on the Tube.
