East Midlands Airport (Castle Donington, United Kingdom)

East Midlands Airport was originally a RAF Air Force station called RAF Castle Donington, which closed in 1946. In the early 1960’s the land was developed by the local authorities and the existing runways were extended and repaired. The airport opened in April 1965. It is located within a 20 mile (32km) radius of three large cities (Derby, Nottingham and Leicester) and serves as the main airport for the counties of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, South Yorkshire and Staffordshire. In 2008 it handled 5.6 million passengers ranking it the 10th busiest UK airport in terms of the number of passengers. East Midlands Airport is a hub for several airlines that undertake domestic, European and long haul flights. The main operators are BMI Baby, Thomson Airway, Thomas Cook Airlines and Ryanair.
