East Midlands Airport was originally a RAF Air Force station called RAF Castle Donington, which closed in 1946. In the early 1960’s the land was developed by the local authorities and the existing runways were extended and repaired. The airport opened in April 1965. It is located within a 20 mile (32km) radius of three large cities (Derby, Nottingham and Leicester) and serves as the main airport for the counties of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, South Yorkshire and Staffordshire.
