Not financially viable in the 1970s the West Cemetery was closed, but the Friends of Highgate Cemetery (a registered charity) was founded to try and care for and conserve the graves. Both cemeteries have now been restored and you can wander freely through the East Cemetery for a small fee. You cannot visit the more over-grown West Cemetery without joining a tour. Picnics and toilet facilities are available at the adjacent Waterlow Park and it is advisable to wear footwear suited to uneven terrain.
