International Airport Logan (Boston, USA)
Flying High: Welcome to Logan International Airport!
Boasting six runways and four passenger terminals, Boston’s Logan International Airport is - by some distance - the largest airport in Massachusetts and indeed the entire New England area. Named after local war hero General Edward Lawrence Logan, this sprawling transport hub occupies some 2,384 acres in East Boston (“Eastie”), where it is just three miles from Boston city centre. This makes getting to and from the city’s downtown neighbourhoods a cinch, with taxi rides taking little more than ten minutes in either direction.
That being said, local bus and train connections operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) - known locally as “the T” - are undoubtedly more economical and environmentally friendly. Both the Blue Line Subway and the Silver Line Rapid Transit Bus run all throughout the day, completing the journey in just 30 minutes.
It’s well worth noting that getting into the city (to South Station) on the Silver Line is absolutely free!
Flying Visit: Things to do in and Around Boston Logan Airport
All of the airport’s terminals (including ‘E’, the international terminal) are linked so exploring the entire airport on foot is a breeze. Handy really, as there’s a lot to explore! As well as the usual array of shops and fast food outlets, you’ll find a number of very decent local dining options on hand, including Boston’s famed Legal Sea Foods restaurants.
If you’re on a layover and feeling in need of some rejuvenation then be sure to head for the spa in Terminal ‘C’. You can also relax in the good company of several art exhibits, plus there are play areas all throughout the airport where kids (and their parents) can let off a little steam.
Being so close to the city makes ad hoc sightseeing an easy and appealing option. Nearby Revere Beach (America’s first public beach) is always a good shout as it’s not far away at all. The New England Aquarium is worth a visit as well, particularly if you have little ones in tow, mainly because it’s located directly off the ever-convenient Blue Line.
Flying Start: Hotels Near Boston Airport
Having the city centre within such easy reach ensures travellers have plenty of choice when searching for suitable Boston Logan Airport Hotels. As with anywhere else, Boston hotels vary enormously in quality, cost and amenities, although those closest to the airport are generally very good.
The Hilton Boston Logan Airport enjoys the privilege of being the closest hotel of all, linked as it is to the airport by a very handy skybridge walkway (and a free shuttle service). An indoor pool and an inviting pub-style restaurant only add to its considerable appeal.
A little further out - a mile to be precise - is the attractive Hyatt Regency Boston Harbor. What it may lack in skybridges it more than makes up for in scenery, offering splendid views across Boston’s famed harbour. The free shuttle bus is a winner too.
More riverfront vistas are on hand at the Seaport Hotel, an upscale conference hotel with a cool bistro and an indoor pool. Though it’s three miles from the airport, it has the substantial advantage of being adjacent to a Silver Line stop and within strolling distance of Boston’s vibrant city centre.
