Kings Cross is an inner-city area in Sydney. It is located not far from the central business district and is considered to be the most densely populated place in Australia. Kings Cross is a home to one of Sydney’s oldest areas, Wooloomooloo. With its numerous strip clubs and “girlie” bars, the area is a popular “red-light” district in Australia. It is also famous for the Neon signs and advertising posters, such as the iconic Coca-Cola sign. Most of the shopping, dining and entertainment venues at Kings Cross are located along both sides of Darlinghurst Road, while the majority of the hotels are on Victoria Street. Until the early 20th century the district was known as Queen’s Cross but due to some confusion with a locality with similar name, it was renamed King’s Cross after King Edward VII. The word “cross” refers to the major intersection formed by William Street and Darlinghurst Road. Some of the popular tourist attractions at Kings Cross include Elizabeth House and the Sydney Jewish Museum. The major annual event at Kings Cross is the Food and Wine Festival which is held each autumn.
