La Pedrera (Barcelona, Spain)

La Pedrera or “the Quarry” is the nickname of the building formally known as Casa Mila. It was commissioned by businessman Pere Mila and his wife who chose Antoni Gaudi as the architect. The building was constructed between 1905 and 1910 and is one of the Gaudi-designs that is covered by the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the “Works of Antoni Gaudi”. Casa Mila sits on a corner of the boulevard called Passeig de Gracia, just up the road from another Gaudi classic, Casa Battlo. It is famous for its sinuous lines, the wrought iron balconies and the strangely human-like chimney pots on the roof. The building is owned by the Catalan bank, Caixa Catalunya, who open parts of Casa Mila to the public. Daily opening hours are from 9.00 in the morning until 18.30 in the winter and 20.00 in the summer months. Last tickets are sold 30 minutes before closing time. Entrance costs €10 for adults with reductions for students and unemployed visitors and for members of the bank. Audio guides are available for a further €3.
