Lake Iskar (Sofia, Bulgaria)

The Iskar Reservoir (Yazovir Iskar) lies approximately 50 km from Sofia. It is fed by the Iskar River and is one of the largest man made reservoirs in Bulgaria. It was constructed between 1948 and 1954 to provide a supply of drinking water for the capital city and surrounding area and to produce water powered electricity. The reservoir spreads over 30 sq.km and has a total length of 25 km. The dam wall is 204 m long and 76 m high. The surrounding area is a popular destination for water sport enthusiasts and anglers. There is a game reserve on the east coast of the reservoir which attracts walkers, game hunters and horse riders. The place is also a preferred spot for picnic or camping. Access to the whole area is free of charge and there are several restaurants, eateries and small hotels nearby.
