The Parc Astérix is a fun park in Plailly, about 22 miles north of Paris. It is based on the characters and themes of the Astérix stories, a cartoon creation by Uderzo and Goscinny. The park has a range of rides and activities, from the thrill-inducing to the gentle, to appeal to all ages. One of the most popular is the giant water splash down the mountain topped by the figure of Astérix which can be seen from some distance away. The names of the rides evoke characters and situations from the stories, e.g. the Tonnerre de Zeus, a wooden roller coaster, and la Galère, a swinging ship. The park is divided into five areas and themes: the Gauls, the Romans, Greece, the Vikings, and Down the Ages. It also offers a dolphin display and a live stage show. There is a hotel, the Trois Hiboux, in the park itself and a range of food outlets and shops. It is situated just off the A1 autoroute north of Paris, with its own exit, and is served by special connections from the centre of Paris and from Charles de Gaulle airport. Opening hours and ticket prices are on the website, which also has details of any temporary closure of attractions.
