Savoy Theatre (London, United Kingdom)

The names Gilbert and Sullivan evoke sentiments of a quintessentially Victorian England. Even if their work is not known by name, everyone will be familiar with their music. They were brought together by Richard DOyly Carte in 1875 and ultimately wrote thirteen operettas. The Savoy Theatre was built largely from the profits of these works by Carte in 1881 to establish a permanent home for their performances. It was the first public building in the world to be lit by electricity. He built the adjacent Savoy Hotel in 1889. They share a common entrance, which has the distinction of being the only road in the country where vehicles drive on the righthand side of the road. The Victorian auditorium was demolished and rebuilt in 1929. It was restored back to its Art Deco state again after a fire in 1990. Today the theatre presents plays and musicals. The current calendar is available from online theatre booking agencies. Nearest Tube: Charing Cross/Embankment Parking: Master Park at Trafalgar Square Wheelchair access is limited (not available in the Stalls, Upper Circle and Bars)
