Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument that is characterised by the curricular setting of large upright stones. It is believed that these stones were erected around 2200BC, but the surrounding earthworks are much older and probably date from around 3100BC. The site has been added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites and it is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge itself is managed by English Heritage although the surrounding area is managed by the National Trust.
