    Thames Barrier (London, United Kingdom)

The Thames Barrier in London is one of the world’s largest movable flood barriers. Downstream from central London, it spans the Thames from Silvertown on the north side of the estuary to Woolwich in the south, 520 metres in length. The structure comprises 10 hollow steel gates which rotate through 90 degrees from the riverbed to reach the height of a 5 storey building. The river remains navigable with channels between the gates. London has always been vulnerable to tidal surges, and the disaster of 1953 in which over 300 died was the catalyst for the concept of a barrier and a general strengthening of all the Thames flood defences. It is claimed that 125 square kilometres of central London are now protected. The Barrier has been operational since 1982 and up to 2010 has been closed over 100 times to protect the city. Regular closings also occur for testing and maintenance. There is a Visitor Centre on the Woolwich side with displays and information about the Barrier and the Thames estuary in general. Opening hours are 10.30am to 4.30pm April to September and 11am to 3.30pm October to March. There is a café and a paying car park.
