The Belgrade Marathon (Belgrade, Serbia)
The Belgrade Marathon is one of Serbia’s major sporting events and it has been declared as an event of special importance by the Belgrade City Council. The first marathon race was held in 1988, and ever since this it takes place every spring, usually on the third Saturday in April. From 1989, the Belgrade Marathon has had international character. The Belgrade Marathon includes several races: Children’s Marathon, for preschools (230 m), 5 km Pleasure Race, which always has the most participants, Semi-Marathon Race and the Marathon as the main race of the event. Over the years, the Belgrade Marathon has had numerous famous promoters and friends, like Fred Lebow, Carl Lewis, Merlene Ottey , Sergei Bubka, Patrik Sjöberg, Mike Powell and Bob Beamon. The Marathon race start line is in front of the National Parliament and the finish line is in front of hotel Moskva, both in the centre of the city. On the day of the marathon the surrounding streets of the Marathon’s route are closed for traffic and crowded with people who come to support the participants.
