Torre de Belém (Lisbon, Portugal)

The Torre de Belém is generally referred to in English as the Belém Tower. Built during the 16th century it is a fortified tower located in the Belém district of Lisbon from where it takes its name. It was originally constructed to celebrate the expedition of Vasco da Gama and is now one of the major landmarks in the city. In 1910 the Belem Tower was classified as a National Monument and in 1983 it was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites, along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery. It occupies a prominent position at the entrance of the Tagus River, where there had been a fortress since at least the 12th century. Built in a late Portugese Gothic style the tower was designed by Francisco de Arruda who drew his influences from Moorish architecture he had encountered whilst on military duties in Morocco. Construction began in 1515 and it was completed in 1521. In the 1840’s the Belém Tower was restored. It stands 35 metres tall and has 5 storeys.
