Praha Zoo can be reached by car, by bus (no.112) or by tram (no. 14 or 17). The zoo is open 365 days a year from 9am to 4pm in the winter months from November to February, until 5pm in March, 6pm in April, May, September and October, and until 7pm in the summer months. Admission costs just under 6€ for an adult, just under 4€ for children between 3 to 15 and is free for children under 3. The car park costs 2€. The zoo was first imagined in 1881, but it wasn’t until 1927 that the first fences were put up and only in 1931 that the zoo opened its doors to the public. Ever since additions have been made to the zoo. In 2002 a ravaging flood due to the rise of the River Vltava devastated half of the zoo. Over 1000 animals were moved and 134 did not survive. Following that flood 20 buildings were demolished and 13 others seriously damaged. A fund raising campaign was launched to find the 8 million Euro’s necessary for its rehabilitation. The zoo nowadays shelters 4,500 animals over 60 hectares of land and receives over a million visitors a year.
