    Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz, Poland)

Auschwitz-Birkenau, near the Polish city of Oświęcim, was the largest and most notorious of the camp complexes built by the government of Nazi Germany to implement its policy of genocide against European Jewry, and against other political and “racial” groups deemed as threats to the purity and supremacy of the Aryan people. In pursuit of this goal, Auschwitz-Birkenau also became an industrial center designed to exploit the labours of its inmates, whose efforts enriched some of Germany’s most important corporations. Auschwitz-Birkenau is now a World Heritage Site as well as a Polish national memorial. Its exhibits preserve key aspects of the camp’s original physical structure (e.g., Crematorium I and most of the Death Block) and include thousands of artefacts left behind by victims and persecutors alike. Some elements of the camp structure that had been destroyed have been reconstructed. A principal purpose of the memorial is to provide educational outreach designed to understand and prevent genocide. Admission to Auschwitz-Birkenau is free, but fees are charged for guided tours and study programs.
