The theatre was opened in April 1889 and was named for David Garrick, an 18th century influential Shakespearian actor. The buidling is Grade II listed and retains many original features. The theatre originally had 800 seats but with the closure of the top level this has been reduced to 732 spit over three levels. Facilities include two bars, one with a balcony overlooking Charing Cross Road. It has shown a variety of productions but is associated mainly with comedies or comedy dramas.
