Neues Palais (Potsdam, Germany)

The New Palace can be found at the western end of the main promenade in Sanssouci Park. The palace was built from 1763 to 1769, the building works started right after the end of the seven year war and lasted for only 6 years. Today the Palace, which is not only the largest building within the park but also the last palace that Frederick the Great built here, is regarded as one of the main examples of Prussian Baroque architecture. The huge complex with its luxurious interior stood empty most of the time, it served for representation and the king himself hardly ever stayed here but offered the opulent rooms to his guests. The only German sovereign to use it as his main residence was the last German Emperor Wilhelm II.To be seen during a visit are 4 ceremonial halls, several galleries, a number of the apartments with their original furnishings and the Palace Theatre. In recognition of its historical significance the New Palace, together with other palaces and parks in Potsdam and Berlin, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1990.
