This beguinage is situated in the suburb of Sint-Amandsberg and has a medieval atmosphere. This was one of the last Beguine convents ever built. Duke Engelbert von Arenberg erected this Neo-Gothic complex between 1873 and 1874 to house about 300 Beguines who had lost their community home, the Old Saint Elisabeth Beguinage inside Ghent which had been dismantled in 1858 due to a strong conflict between the civil and ecclesiastical authorities. The beguinage includes a church, a chapel, 14 convents, an infirmary and 80 houses still inhabited by the beguines who earn their living by lace-making. It was listed together with other 12 Flemish beguinages as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1998. Opening hours: Van Arenbergstraat Gate from 06:30am until 11:00pm; Schoolstraat Gate from 06:00am until 11:00pm.
